What to Expect at Your Newborn Photography Session on the Sunshine Coast

Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of life’s most precious moments, and those first few weeks seem to pass incredibly quickly. A Sunshine Coast newborn photography session gives you the opportunity to capture those tiny details, beautiful expressions and early connections before they begin to change.

At Ruby and Lace Photography, newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed and unhurried, allowing plenty of time for feeding, settling, cuddles and all the little things babies need. There’s no expectation that your newborn will sleep perfectly or follow a schedule — we simply work around your baby.

If you’re considering newborn photography, here’s what you can expect and how you can prepare for your session.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photography Session?

It’s a good idea to book your newborn photography session while you’re still pregnant. This gives us plenty of time to plan your session and talk about the style of photographs you would love to create.

Of course, babies have their own ideas about when they’re going to arrive, so your due date simply gives us a starting point. Once your baby is born, we can confirm the session date and make sure it works comfortably for you and your new arrival.

If your baby has already arrived and you haven’t booked a session, don’t worry. It’s always worth getting in touch to see what availability we have. Beautiful newborn photographs can still be created beyond those very first days.

When Is the Best Time to Photograph Your Newborn?

Newborn photography is often associated with the first couple of weeks after birth, when babies tend to sleep more deeply and naturally curl into those beautiful positions that remind us just how tiny they once were.

However, there isn’t a single “perfect” age for every baby. Every newborn is different, and your recovery and your baby’s wellbeing are always more important than fitting into a particular timeframe.

If your baby is a little older, we can still create beautiful photographs. Older newborns may be more alert and expressive, giving us the opportunity to capture eye contact, little stretches and some wonderful glimpses of their developing personality.

At Ruby and Lace Photography, the session is adapted to your baby rather than expecting your baby to adapt to the session.

What Happens During a Newborn Photography Session?

A newborn photography session is deliberately relaxed and unhurried. Babies don’t work to a timetable, so there is plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, settling and nappy changes whenever they’re needed.

During the session, we’ll gently work through a variety of photographs, capturing your baby on their own as well as those beautiful little details such as tiny fingers, toes, eyelashes and expressions. The aim is to create a collection of images that will always remind you just how small your baby once was.

There’s no need to worry if your baby needs extra time to settle or simply wants to be held. We follow your baby’s cues throughout the session and allow things to unfold naturally, keeping the experience comfortable and relaxed for both baby and parents.

Feeding, Settling and Taking Breaks

Feeding and settling are a completely normal part of a newborn photography session. If your baby is hungry, needs a cuddle or simply needs a little time with Mum or Dad, we stop and give them all the time they need.

There’s never any pressure to rush. In fact, these little breaks often give everyone a chance to relax and can even create opportunities for some beautiful, natural photographs of the connection between you and your baby.

Whether your baby sleeps peacefully throughout the session or needs several feeds and cuddles along the way, we simply work at their pace. The most important thing is that your baby is comfortable and that you can enjoy the experience.

What Should You Have Ready for Your Newborn Photography Session?

What you’ll need for your newborn photography session will depend a little on whether we’re photographing your baby in your own home or at our home. Either way, there’s no need to make things complicated — we’ll talk you through everything beforehand so you know what to expect.

For sessions in your own home, we can work with the spaces and natural surroundings that are familiar to you and your baby. Don’t worry about having a perfectly styled or spotless house. We’re there to photograph your family and your new arrival, and we’ll help find the best areas and light to create beautiful images.

If you’re coming to our home for your session, we’ll let you know beforehand what you need to bring. Generally, the most important things are simply everything you would normally need to keep your baby comfortable — feeds, nappies, a dummy if you use one, and a change of clothes.

Whichever option you choose, our aim is the same: to make your Sunshine Coast newborn photography experience relaxed, comfortable and enjoyable, with plenty of time to work around your baby.

For helpful information about caring for your newborn during those first weeks, the Pregnancy, Birth and Baby website also has a range of Australian Government-supported resources for new parents.

Can Parents and Siblings Be Included?

Absolutely. Your newborn photographs are about welcoming a new baby into your family, so including parents and siblings can be a beautiful part of the session.

Photographs with Mum and Dad capture just how tiny your newborn is in those first weeks, while images with brothers and sisters can preserve the beginning of a very special relationship. We can photograph the whole family together as well as create individual moments between your baby and each family member.

If older siblings are involved, particularly young children, we keep things relaxed and work around them too. They don’t need to sit perfectly or perform for the camera — sometimes the most treasured photographs come from the spontaneous cuddles, smiles and interactions that happen naturally.

Whether your session takes place in your home or at ours, we’ll work with your family to create a mixture of beautiful newborn portraits and genuine family moments.

What If My Baby Won’t Sleep?

Please don’t worry if your baby doesn’t sleep through their newborn photography session. Every baby is different, and some are simply more alert than others — particularly when there are interesting new things happening around them.

A wide-awake baby can give us some beautiful photographs too. Those curious expressions, little stretches, tiny yawns and moments of eye contact can become some of your favourite images from the session.

If your baby becomes unsettled, we simply stop for a feed, cuddle or change and give them time to relax. There’s no pressure to get your baby to sleep by a particular time and no need for parents to feel stressed if things don’t go exactly as planned.

At Ruby and Lace Photography, we work around your baby rather than expecting your baby to work around us. A successful newborn session isn’t about having a perfectly sleeping baby — it’s about capturing this incredibly special stage of your family’s life.

Choosing Your Sunshine Coast Newborn Photographer

Choosing a newborn photographer is about more than simply finding someone whose photographs you love. You also want to feel comfortable knowing that your baby will be treated with patience, care and respect throughout the session.

At Ruby and Lace Photography, we believe newborn photography should never feel rushed. Every baby is different, so sessions are allowed to unfold at their own pace, with plenty of time for feeding, settling, changing and cuddles whenever they’re needed.

We also want your photographs to feel like your family. Whether you prefer beautifully styled newborn portraits, natural family moments or a combination of both, we’ll talk with you beforehand about the photographs you love and the memories you’d like us to capture.

With the choice of having your session in your own home or at ours, our aim is to make your Sunshine Coast newborn photography experience as relaxed and comfortable as possible while creating photographs your family can treasure for years to come.
